While we were cooped up in the BPM Learning Zone expanding minds and dropping knowledge on all things music-making, Birmingham’s NEC was buzzing and bumping with beats and basslines from some of the hottest new kit for DJs and producers. We took a look at some of the best bits of kit that had BPM talking.
Pioneer’s latest DJ Swiss Army Knife can play tracks from CD, USB, iDevice and even over WiFi! It also works as a MIDI controller and includes a two channel mixer, Rekordbox compatibility, sample loading and built-in effects. It’s a flexible machine and coming in at £849, the R1 can do a lot more for a lot less. It’s pretty chunky in the flesh but looks fantastic and feels great.
Ever since the Volcas popped up at this year’s NAMM Show in LA, everyone’s been waiting to get their hands on these slick micro machines. We were lucky enough to spend some time with these all-analogue boxes and we can confirm: belive the hype. These bad boys sound huge!
The latest update to the Kontrol S-series from NI keeps the aesthetic that made the controllers so popular but adds some sleek new features. The most exciting one is definitely Traktor DJ for iPad support – DJs can now use full-size jogs, buttons and faders with the flexible app for the best of both worlds. This is a big step for iPad DJs and we’re excited about what’s coming next! Native had only one of these at BPM but we love the new look and the new aluminium jog wheels felt great.
Novation Launchpad Mini
Novation’s Launchpad has been one of the biggest controllers of the past few years, with flexible control over Ableton Live at a low price making it the perfect solution for heaps of producers. Their iPad app of the same name has been equally successful and now they’re bridging the two with a new pad-powered product, Launchpad Mini! Working the same as the main Launchpad with FL Studio and Ableton, it also works with the iPad app, which will soon offer custom sample import! Another step in the right direction for tablet music makers.
