LEAF Round-up: Day One (Daniel Miller, Chris Liebing, Joe Goddard)

This year LEAF opened its doors for the first time, with performances and talks from some of the biggest acts in electronic music. We were at the heart of the action, taking over the upstairs of Shoreditch Electric Light Station and hosting masterclasses with Ableton, Daniel Miller, Chris Liebing and Joe Goddard.

First up was Alex Banks, performing material from his upcoming album using Ableton and its hardware companion Push. It was an outstanding performance, delivering huge bass, incredible sample treatments and audio editing and beautiful melodies. We opened up the packed room to questions on Ableton, Push and live performance. Next, Mute Records founder, synth enthusiast and electronic music legend Daniel Miller joined us for a Modular Synth Masterclass, talking about his history with synths and giving us a demo on how modulars work. It was a pleasure to be joined by a such an influential figure in UK music history and we’ll be uploading our chat soon.

Techno titan and all-round nice guy Chris Liebing joined us next for a masterclass on his incredible DJ setup. Using two laptops, NI Traktor and Maschine, controllers and an Allen & Heath mixer, he can deconstruct and rebuild tracks on the fly as well as play samples on the fly. We talked to Chris about his DJ history and where he thinks things are going for DJ technology.

Finally, Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard broke down his latest remix of Donna Summer’s Sunset People for a special tribute album in Cubase. It was an entertaining chat covering all things synths, drums and disco.

It was an amazing first day of LEAF 2013 and we hope it’s around for many years to come. It doesn’t end there though, we’re back tomorrow in the same room with masterclasses from Kevin Saunderson, MK and Kindness. Don’t miss it. Subscribe to our YouTube channel to keep up to date with all our masterclasses and live events.
